The Sons of Russ

As you can tell from the majority of my posts, I am focusing a bit more on my Dread list right now, but I do have another list....my competitive list.  Let's go back and have a history lesson of Dave's 40k experience.

I started this game because of a single model.  I was one of those guys who thought 40k was for kids.  40k was checkers where as fantasy was chess.  I will now admit that I was wrong.  They are just two different systems.  Anyway,  I am a fairly accomplished painter/converter, so when I look at an army, part of me looks at it for aesthetic value.  The model that got me into 40k was the Emperor's Champion model for the Black Templars.  I love the pose, the confident stride that carries this combat monster into battle.  I love the sword.  It is just a great model.  So, naturally, I started my 40k experience with Black Templars.  I even did pretty well with them.  My 5-7 games of 40k were 'ardboyz where I placed 5th in my area with Templars.  They did have one fault though.  Not much variety.  You see, I have been a Fantasy Dark Elf player since I started the hobby 7 years ago.  They have tons of variety to the army.  I always had trouble with other armies that I owned because they seemed so 1 dimensional in the list creation arena.  I found Templars to be the same.

But, I frequent the Bolter and Chainsword forum.  In their Black Templar sub forum, a member suggested using templar models to represent a Marshal's elite force using the Space Wolf codex for rules.  I really liked that idea.  Thus, my Indomitus Penitence Crusade was born.

The quick fluff on this army is that a Marshal spoke out against Helbrecht in an open council and thus drew his ire.  He was shipped off with a minimal sized force to bring a world into compliance.  It just so happens that the world's culture is based no war.  All other attempts to bring the world into compliance have failed, but rather than orbitally bombard the place, my Marshal is sent in with no supplies save what he brings in upon dropping onto the planet.  As he studies the culture, he realizes the best way to conquer the barbaric hordes and bring them to heel is to bring in some of their warriors, train them to be marines and adopt some of their cultural views.  Thus, my army was born.

Here is the list I take right now.  Feel free to let me know what you think about it:

Rune Priest- chooser, living lightning, jaws of the world wolf

5 Wolf Scouts- melta, wolf guard with combi-melta, power weapon
5 Wolf Scouts- melta, wolf guard with combi-melta, power weapon
Wolf Guard unit- 4 pistol/power weapon, 2 combi-melta/power weapon, 1 terminator with cyclone missile launcher (See units for their wolf guard)

5 Grey Hunters- melta gun, wolf guard with pistol/power weapon, riding in a TL lascannon razorback
5 Grey Hunters- melta gun, wolf guard with pistol/power weapon, riding in a TL lascannon razorback
5 Grey Hunters- melta gun, wolf guard with pistol/power weapon, riding in a TL lascannon razorback

10 Grey Hunters- 2x melta guns, wolf standard, mark of the wulfen, riding in rhino

Landspeeder- multi-melta, heavy flamer
Thunderwolf Cav- thunderhammer, storm shield

5 Long Fangs- 4x missiles, Cyclone missile)
5 Long Fangs- 4x missiles
5 Long Fangs- 4x missiles
This clocks in at right around 2,000pt.  This represents a splinter force of the Marshal's company that is led by a native of the planet who has gained high rank in the Marshal's elite guard.  Thus, his psychic ability is tolerated (I know, I know, heresy).  Anyway, let me know what you think.
