What got you into the game?

After writing an article on fluff and reading various players' experiences with breaking into the hobby, I am reminded of how I got into 40k.  I was actually a long time WFB player at the time.  My main army was Dark Elves, but I always owned at least one other army besides.

I broke into 40k because of one model.  I absolutely love the Emperor's Champion model for Black Templars.  The model screams, "I am a combat monster, come and get some." The posing, that slow purposeful walk forward, carrying the emperor's justice to heretic and xeno alike.  He was awesome.  He was the first model I bought.

So that did it for me.  I am interested to hear about other players' initial experiences.  Did you see someone else play a game?  Did you get into because of the fluff?  Do you like strategy games?  Leave a comment and tell me how you got into 40k.

Into 40k in particular. As a youngster I used to paint various and assorted minis. One day I stumbled up a blister pack with the original Grey Knight Terminators in it. Back then you got 2 in a blister for eight dollars and change. I loved the look of them and that got me into the minis, and eventually into the game. Hard to believe that was over 20 years ago!

... Playing Final Liberation in '96 was the final straw! After finishing the game, I went to my hobby store and got me an imperial army.
Which included squats in those days...
