First time out is an epic fail

The nipple wing got messed up.  I played a sadly quick game on Vassal tonight to try my list out.

First a foreword on the list.  I read a tactica that said you can roll a single reserve roll for a unit and then combat squad it when you are ready to deploy it.  Unfortunately, I can't find a clear reading of the rules to support this, so I didn't play it that way.  I took:

Mephiston
Dante

3x Sanguinar Priests: jump packs

5 Sanguianry Guard- 1x infernus pistol, 1 x power fist, 3x angelus bolter/glaive
5 Sanguianry Guard- 1x infernus pistol, 1 x power fist, 3x angelus bolter/glaive
5 Sanguianry Guard- 1x infernus pistol, 4x angelus bolter/glaive
5 Sanguianry Guard- 1x infernus pistol, 4x angelus bolter/glaive

5 Vanguard Vets- 1x fist, 1x lightning claw, 1x storm shield, 1x infernus pistol, 1x pistol/ccw
5 Vanguard Vets- 1x fist, 1x lightning claw, 1x storm shield, 1x pistol/ccw/melta bomb, 1x pistol/ccw

I played a witch hunter list.  We played capture and control with dawn of war setup.  I chose to go last.

What went wrong:
1) My reserve rolls, with rerolls were terrible!
2) My opponent made great invul saves from faith spells.
3) Mephiston wiffed! 5 S10 wounds on a model with a 3+ invul should yield a dead model.  Nope.
4) I deepstrike mishapped killing a squad.
5) My D6" scatters always rolled 5 or more inches.  In one instance that cost me a sanguinary priest due to a dangerous terrain roll.

By turn 3 I had lost 3 sanguinary guard squads, a priest, and dante.  Mephiston was locked in combat with a lone character and my vanguard vets were still in reserve.  Ugh!

I feel like I was plagued by terrible luck.  I managed to blow up a land raider. That's it. Woohoo!

I am definitely not giving up on the idea yet, but this game sucked.  I will try the list as is for a few more games and then I am going to change it up some.  Thanks for reading my whine.

But you clearly cannot combat squad while in reserves, so you have to split after you roll for them.
bad luck can suck. I've had mine where with DOA I still only had one unit come in turn 2.

Here are my two thoughts on the list.
1. Mephiston doesn't bring anything to your list. you have tons of fast choppy goodness. he doesn't have a jp and cant DOA. consider a JP librarian.
2. I'm not a fan of "pure" Sanguard. 2 or 3 squads are fine, but a squad or two of Assault marines give you a bit more for almost the same money sometimes.
Just my thoughts. good luck next game, interested in hearing how it goes.

Thanks for the comment and encouragement! I appreciate it. I think I am going to totally agree with you about mephiston, but I want to try him out. In the end, I think the jump librarian will be better though.
I understand the the pure sanguinary guard sentiments too. They are not that competitive, but they are a really fun theme.
After another test game or two, I figure I will drop mephi for a regular librarian and perhaps add an honor guard. We will have to see.
